Criminal: The Sinners - Sean Phillips

When I read on his blog recently that Sean Phillips had some 'signed and sketched' copies of Criminal: The Sinners for sale from his Amazon store it was too good an offer to resist - regular visitors to Escape from Tomorrow will know just how much a fan of the book I am.

Mr Phillips - thank you.

Sean Phillips at the Bristol International Comic & Small Press Expo

If you're a regular visitor to Escape from Tomorrow you might remember my good fortune in discovering that Sean Phillips - Criminal, Sleeper, Marvel Zombies ... - had put a few copies of his book Incognito up for sale on Amazon and that each copy was to include an original character sketch of the buyers choice.

I asked for, as was very grateful to receive, a magnificent sketch of Ava Destruction along with the artist's signature on one of the inside front pages.

However, and at the risk of sounding ungrateful, I later regretted that I didn't have something to hang on my wall alongside the one or two other convention sketches that I own. So when I saw that Mr Phillips was appearing at the Bristol International Comic & Small Press Expo I spotted my opportunity - with comic backing-board in hand I took my place in the long queue for a sketch and waited my turn ...

So now I've got the best of both worlds I think - a unique book and a beautiful piece of original art that I can hang on my wall: each featuring one of my favourite comic-book characters Ava Destruction.

In my final look back to the Bristol Expo I'll be taking a look at one of my favourite smaller publishers that are always in attendance at the show -
Markosia Enterprises.

Incognito Original Artwork and Book

Regular readers will know that I'm a big fan of the Criminal series written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips and colours from Val Staples, published by the Marvel Comics' imprint Icon.

I've been reading the books in collected editions and really enjoying the combination of great writing, art and colours. I think I'm up to date now with the Criminal trades so I was looking around at some of the other books from the same creative team and decided to pick-up the first collected edition of Incognito.

The very same day I was looking online for Incognito Sean Phillips announced on his blog that he'd put a few copies of the book up for sale on Amazon and that each copy would include an original character sketch of the buyers choice ... perfect timing!

I asked for a sketch of the character Ava Destruction and couldn't believe what I received - inside the book on the 'title' page was the most amazing sketch - I don't actually think the word 'sketch' does justice to this great artwork.

I'm very pleased to own this unique book.

Batgirl/Stephanie Brown and Barbara Gordon Drawn by Lee Garbett

Over the past weekend I attended the Exeter Comic Expo held in the beautiful city of Exeter in Devon, South West England.

The event was organised by
Fantasy Events, who are also responsible for the Expo held each May in the city of Bristol.

Along with a great range of dealers with everything from toys and t-shirts, collected editions and longboxes full of back issues (6 for £1 - you can't go wrong can you?) there were a number of my favourite artists and writers in attendance.

I was particularly pleased to meet and spend some time talking with Lee Garbett - who's currently working on the Batgirl book of course. Over a period of 25 minutes or so (I think it felt longer to the chap behind me in the queue!) we chatted as he sketched these AMAZING pictures (I hope my scanner has done justice to the images)

Some great souvenirs of what was a great day.
